Are days of obligation obligations for RCIA participants?

Hi,

If you are a Catholic, you are bound to the particular obligations of Canon Law (such as days of fasting, abstinence, participation in Mass). Some people in RCIA are baptized Catholics so they would be bound. You identify yourself as a “future Catholic” so you would not be bound to these requirements. That being said, there are obligations of divine law (“Keep holy the Sabbath”, for example) that bind everyone. I don’t think you are asking about that, though.

If you can fulfill the obligations even while you do not have to, great.

Dan

:hmmm:

Athlete trainers say that repetition makes perfect, the muscles after a while get trained and can do it automatically, I am not saying that we need to view the days of obbligation as something to do authomatically but if you ingrain yourself from the beginning in keeping them, hopefully after a while they won’t be a “burden”.

Just my :twocents: but YMMV 😃

No but practice makes perfect so train yourself to be the best for the future if you are seriouos about being catholic. If you truly love our Lord it’s never to soon to give him your time. It is important to attend mass on days of obligation, as a matter of fact it is a mortal sin not too. Welcome to our family and may God bless and keep you safe. Brenda:)👍

I would say if your a catechumen you are already a member of the Church and should feel obligated to attend all Holy Day of Obligation services. The same goes with baptized Catholics, but I know that this does not happen.

My wife and I are going through RCIA as well and even though Father told us we are not technically bound to attend, we find that it allows us the sense of communion with the church to do so. We actually rearranged a businedd trip to attend the All Saints Day Vigil and thoroughly enjoyed it. So, as others have said, if you can attend, then I would recommend doing so as you will not regret it…😃

No, but you should. Put simply, if you want to be Catholic then you’d better start living like one.

That is what this time of formation in RCIA is all about. Don’t wait until you’re confirmed and then decide - once you are bound to them for life - that all the demands of Catholic living are not for you.

If one will not meet these simplest of obligations this year then what makes them believe that they somehow will for the rest of their lives?

Immerse yourself in the Catholic faith this year. Live it.

Welcome home. 👍

:sad_yes:

If back in the days of the apostles you wanted to follow Christ but you couldn’t quite speak to Him or the Apostles yet, it would make perfect sense that you’d start behaving like them, imitating Christ and following His teachings 🙂 This way, when He welcomes the new followers, He’ll turn to you and say: “I know you! Even before being a formal disciple, you followed me devoutly. You have showed great love, and great love you shall receive from my Father.”
