Metaphysically speaking, surely, to be a thing is merely to express existence; that it is not a “no-thing”. There is no higher order. A person is a thing. God is a thing. Why am I not correct?🙂
In ordinary parlance “thing” is used to refer to inanimate objects. Even an animal is not usually called a thing.

To refer to God as a thing seems irreverent…
 
I don’t see how the existence of objective facts such as, for example, the fact that the earth orbits the sun, provides a problem for materialism.

Suspect this is mere wishful thinking on the part of an anti-materialist, who doesn’t understand the thing he deplores.
