Are fandoms sinful?

Hello there, and God bless!
I have a question; when does being a fan of something become a sin? I’ve recently gotten into a show that I really enjoy, and have even began to write fanfiction about it. I realize that you cannot serve two masters, as Scripture says, so at what point does this become sinful?
Any answers would help!

The answer is if it is an occasion of sin for you.

Does it lead to impure.thoughts?

Are you spending too much time on it to the point of neglecting your other duties and obligations - sleep, work, school, prayer, spending time with family amd friends?

Are you spending too much money on it so that you can’t meet your financial obligations such as supporting yourself or your family?

If things like these are happening then it may be a sin.

Just enjoying an otherwise good or at least non-sinful show is hardly a sin. Now if you became so obsessed with it to the point you neglected your religious, family, or work duties than you might have an issue. If in doubt consult your pastor.

It’s terrific that you have something that resonates with your imagination. Does it do it in a healthy way, or in an unhealthy way? If it’s healthy, that’s great. If it’s getting in the way of your work/family/obligations, you might step backwards.

There’s nothing wrong with writing fanfiction. It’s sort of a shortcut— the characters already exist; your readers already know their personalities/motivations/relationships/etc; you can just focus on your plot and dialogue. Are you writing things that you wouldn’t mind your mom reading about? Then you’re probably fine. Are you writing trashy drivel? Then you’d probably want to reroute your creative juices into something a little more edifying. 🙂

LilyM’s advice is great. That would also apply to just about any activity in life, not just a fandom.

I’d also add that if you are meeting people through the fandom who are leading you into sin, you may want to rethink your fandom activities. You might still be able to be a fan of whatever it is, but might have to cut yourself off from that particular fandom group.

If you are reading for entertainment that is normal but why are you using your writing skills to neglect: Category:Catholicism articles needing attention - Wikipedia
Um, I like to write stuff too that isn’t necessarily all about Godly things all the time.
Let’s not go overboard. We’re allowed to have a little fun with our talents.

Also, just because someone can write does not mean they have the skills or the interest to do all types of writing. The type of writing done for a fandom is vastly different in many cases from the type of writing done for a Catholic article.

Oh, no doubt, I didn’t mean to come off as too judgemental. It started out like a suggestion then I just sounded like a jerk, my bad… One of my biggest weaknesses
