Are Indulgences useless now?

As I know it, in order to receive an indulgence you have to go to confession, receive communion, have no attachment to sin, and pray for the intentions of the pope. If the chair of Peter is empty then one cannot pray for the intentions of the current pope because there is no pope.That is the case now since John Paul II died. Does anyone know if a person can receive indulgences now?

Good question. My guess would be that if you prayed for the repose of the Pope’s soul that would count. Or, even better, pray that God gives the Church a good Pope who will crack down on the disodents and restore orthodoxy. That is what the Church really needs.

Of course you can still pray for the intentions of the pope! The intentions remain, even though he is dead. His body is dead, but his spirit has gone to eternal life. I am sure he would still want us to pray for the intentions he had in his heart before he died.

Yes, indeed, we can still receive indulgences.

The intentions of JPII remain. Just because he’s not here doesn’t mean he no longer exists. See this.
