Are intrusive thoughts sin? Are spontaneous violent, sexual, or blasphemous thoughts sin?"

A thought is not a Sin, if you just let it come and go.

You cannot really stop birds from flying over your head, but you can stop it from building a nest in your head.

When you allow the thoughts to nest in your head, that’s when it becomes a problem/eventually a sin to be dealt with.

Dear Ransri,

The site you have linked to is a heretical, Sola Scriptura, anti-Catholic site which promotes the theologically questionable “Sinner’s Prayer” as some sort of royal road to salvation.

Please do not give it any more publicity, especially on a Catholic forum. 😦

Beat me to it 😃

Sometimes one just has to say, “That’s not MY thought,” and then think about something else.

On the contrary, this is one of the primary purposes of this forum. A Roman Catholic has read something from a non-Catholic source and wants to know of its applicability to Catholic teachings.

Especially given that this particular subject is one that would be hard to find a good discourse on elsewhere, asking for additional information here was a good move. The OP could have given a little more of a question in the post to clarify, true, but the title makes it clear that this is a person who is honestly looking for what the Catholic teaching on the subject is. We should never discourage someone who wishes to learn more about our faith.

Maybe, possibly. A sudden intrusive thought might fall under the category of venial sin. For a sin to be mortal, thereby needing the Sacrament of Reconciliation for the sinner, a sin must have three conditions met. The first of which is that the sin must be committed with full consent of the sinner. The others being a grave matter and knowing the sin is a sin.

Intrusive thoughts are generally not committed with full consent.

Peace,
B
