Are leftovers already blessed, or should we bless them again?

Utterly silly question!

Earlier today, I prayed the standard blessing over my meal. Then I ate most of it.

A few hours later, I took the leftovers out of the fridge and continued eating. While chewing, I suddenly realized I hadn’t prayed before I began eating (which is usually my habit). But then I also realized – wait, maybe that’s redundant? Because I already prayed over this specific food? So I compromised by saying the prayer in my head, not out loud, then resumed chewing.

Now, I know this isn’t a matter of sin or anything, and I don’t mean to be scrupulous – but I’ve suddenly realized I’m curious about the specific application of meal blessings! So, good people of the CA Forums:

Does anyone know whether our meal blessing is blessing the food itself, or just blessing ourselves in the act of eating it during that meal?

Because if the former, that might suggest it doesn’t benefit anything to bless the food again when we eat it at a different meal as leftovers (or that we get a double blessing from food blessed twice, haha)… But if the latter, it’d be reasonable to pray before each separate time-of-eating, even if just resuming eating food over which a blessing has already been said?

Obviously it’s always good to remember to be thankful before a meal. I’m not questioning that. At the same time, I’m wondering whether the meal blessing is actually believed to do anything beyond ‘remind us to be thankful’, and what the significance of that is, re: leftovers.

I know this question is totally ridiculous. So please don’t take it too seriously. But honestly, I’m curious whether anyone has an actual ‘answer’ on this, that’s rooted in anything other than random musings!

I’m not an expert. I’ve always considered it to be for the act of eating/receiving the meal rather than blessing the actual food.

But personally I keep it to main meals. I don’t say a prayer every time I take a snack out of the fridge.

As for an answer from somebody who’s smarter than I am - I’m quite sure that this has come up on Catholic Answers Live but I can’t find it when I do a very quick search. I believe (I could be wrong) that the blessing is not intended for the actual food.

If you have more time than I do then you may be able to find it in a CA archive.

IMO, if I had a large midday meal and then had the leftovers for my meal at night, I would still say the Grace Before Meals prayer again.

Firstly, because I am again acknowledging that the food comes from God, His Providence for me, and I am asking Him to bless it - so it then becomes sanctified before I eat it and hopefully I will obtain whatever grace I may from eating it, and it may also be a means for me to increase in grace.

It keeps me humble, reminds me that I am dependent on God for not just for sustenance of bodily life, but also for my spiritual life (and these Thy Gifts, which I am about to receive…) - hopefully more than just temporal food.

Do you bless the actual food in a similar to how a priest does?

We aren’t blessing the food ourselves - we are asking God to bless our food (and ourselves).

“Bless us O Lord, and these Thy gifts, which we are about to receive, from Thy bounty, through Christ our Lord. Amen.”

Have gone out to lunch with a couple of others and the parish priest at that time, and Father blessed the food including making the sign of the cross over it - completely different to when we might pray the Grace Before Meals prayer.
