Are Protestant marriages recognized by the Church?

An aquaintance and recent convert to the Catholic church asked me if she should be receiving Communion since her marriage took place in an Episcopal Church prior to her conversion. This is the only marriage for her and her husband so there are no annulment issues. She has been reluctant to approach her husband about having their marriage blessed since he is agnostic and only reluctantly supports her choice to be Catholic. My advice to her is to refrain from receiving the Blessed Sacrament until she can be informed. Can she receive or does she need to have her marriage blessed in the Church?
