Are roles for husband & wife laid out in the Bible?

My fundamentalist friends are very adimit about spousal roles. They say that God wants husbands to be head of the family meaning that he guides the family in major areas & that he leads the family spiritually. What does a wife do then when her husband takes a more passive role? You can’t wait around to spiritually lead your family or decide on methods of discipline. Someone has to take the lead. There is such a small window of opportunity when it comes to your children.

they only focus on the verse that mentions that wives should submit to their husbands… (St Paul’s writing)… but the forget to finish reading “the rest of the story” where St Paul continues with “and husbands shall love their wives as Christ loved the Church”. they forget he died for the church… they forget, he came to serve not to rule… they forget a whold lot of the goodies.

a complete reading of the scripture below is what i reccomend… 👍

Ephesians 5 25Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her 26to make her holy, cleansing[2] her by the washing with water through the word, 27and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless. 28In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. 29After all, no one ever hated his own body, but he feeds and cares for it, just as Christ does the church-- 30for we are members of his body. 31"For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh."[3] 32This is a profound mystery–but I am talking about Christ and the church. 33However, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband.

Thanks for all the quotes. They are very helpful.

But what is a wife to do if her husband does not take on this role? If her husband is passive or if he places importance in superficiality is she supposed to submit to that & become passive & superficial herself?

JPII’s Theology of the Body puts everything in perspective! Both my husband and I have gained so much from listening to a CD set by Christopher West called “A Crash Course in the Theology of the Body~Naked without Shame”. “Theology…” covers how mankind was created in the beginning (our role, our purpose), how we should strive to live now (after the fall), and the glory to come in our resurrected bodies in full communion. It makes so much sense and really encourages us to fulfill our roles as man and woman husband and wife (and celebates too!) and creatures of God. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! You can get it from the Gift Foundation.
