Last October I underwent coronary bypass surgery. I still haven’t completely recovered, and am 66 years old. What am I required to do regarding fasting during Lent?
In the United States, fasting is only required of those who are ages 18 to 59 on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. Those who are ill are also exempted from the fast. As for abstinence from meat, that is required for those ages 14 and up on Ash Wednesday, Good Friday, and the Lenten Fridays. If a patient needs to eat meat for medical reasons, he can be exempted from the abstinence requirement.
