Hi, I wanted to know if tattoos are sinful and against catholic teachings even if it’s to cover up certain parts of your body that you don’t want anyone to see so that you would feel more comfortable and confident about yourself not that I don’t anyway but it would help, I also wanted to get tattoos because they have a lot of meanings behind them.

As long as it’s not satanic or blasphemous, or overly violent or sexual, it should be fine. Use good judgment.

Are you talking about covering up or distracting from scars? Or do you mean something else?

As other people have said, as a Catholic you have the freedom to get a tattoo. But you might want to talk about your motivations with someone, because tattoos are permanent.

Maybe do a test run with something less permanent, like marker or transfer art?

A topic covered in many past thread…and the topic does not belong, as presented, in the Sacred Scripture category.

Maybe you will get your question answered by searching previous threads, or posting it in a more appropriate category?

Here is a suggestion…How about blessed sacramentals? They help our faith and give us peace and confidence in Our Lord and His Holy Mother.

There’s no teaching against tattoos. If you are young, however, listen to your parents. Don’t argue with them about why you should be able to get a tattoo. Wait, at least, until you’re older.

Let prudence guide you. Some people (and employers) can be biased against tattoos, so you might want to consider that. My husband has a tattoo that he had to cover up for one of his jobs years ago. It was a pain in the butt because it was located near the inside of his elbow on his forearm so it meant wearing a large bandaid over it or wearing long sleeved shirts in the summer.

Tattoos have been used by many ancient cultures.
Now to the Chosen people the descendants of Abraham they were forbidden only when they were about to enter the promised land.
The following passage is in preparation of this event.
Leviticus 19:28 You shall not cut your flesh for the dead, and you shall not make other figures or marks on yourself. I am the Lord.

Also in Leviticus where “markings” of the flesh can be attributed to a state of “uncleanness” whereas the Priests would have to discern whether it was leprosy or a scar a Tattoo would have allowed the person to hide them. Perhaps this is why it was forbidden.
However since we are New Covenant people and many of the dietary laws do not apply to us “Thanks be to GOD!!!” the Church has not outright forbidden them. But they are tolerated. In general we should avoid marking, mutilating or changing our body. We should respect our body as it was given to us. Not trying to become somebody or something else. Which is the preponderant issue in our times.
“I don’t like the way I look…I’ll have the plastic surgeon fix it.” And I will spend $$$ doing it to boot. Also this changes are almost permanent and one should be very careful about taking those steps.

Nope. The Old Testament ceremonial laws, like eating shellfish and touching pork, are not binding on Christians.

I was in the Marine Corps and got more than a few tattoos, back before they put all of the restrictions on them. That being said I wish I hadn’t gotten them. Most of mine are religious and I still would rather not have them. I would seriously consider what you are going to do before you do it because you will be stuck with it the rest of your life. I used to wear a short sleeve dress shirt to Mass until someone wanted to talk to me about my tattoos in the middle of Mass. Now I wear a suit to Mass and long sleeve shirts to adoration just to avoid that. Society is more accepting of tattoos now but I still wish I’d never got any.
