Are the complex set of rules of the Catholic Church a barrier to Christian unity?

All rules that are not true. . If we are concerned about the law of God, I would focus on the summary of the 10 commandments which Jesus revealed as the two greatest commandments.

And what is the standard for what is or is not true? Would not the establishment of a standard to decide what is and is not true be rule(s) itself? To say something is or is not acceptable by the standard of the two greatest commandments is an establishment of a “rule” regardless of whether it is written or not. So in the end, the only way possible for the “list” not to be complex is to be in total willful ignorance

Life is full of rules: gravity, nutrition, respiration, communication, touch, love… Truth is complex and has many boundaries, or “rules”. These define life. Without them, there would be none.

Jesus taught all kinds of rules and likewise the Holy Apostles that followed him. One does not have to read far into the Scriptures to see that…or do they?
