So a couple years ago, I read the Darth Bane trilogy. The books were very interesting, but they focused on the life of Darth Bane who was a character similar to most Sith; he wanted power, he didn’t value the life of others, and so forth. Is it fine to read such books, or would it be a sin?

I can’t say for certain not having read those books, but in general Star Wars does present the Dark Side as something evil and its adherents as villains who aren’t to be emulated (does anyone really want to live the life of Palpatine or Vader? Look closer at what that entails - constant backstabbing and paranoia, disfigurement, being burned to a crisp and having to rely on a life-support suit just to breathe, committing numerous war crimes and crimes against humanity, being rubbish at actually ruling a galaxy-wide empire, an aversion to sand, etc. etc. etc. – for anyone who said “yes”…) so in that light it would be OK.

If it were to present the Dark Side as something actually desirable, then it’d be iffy IMO.

I wouldn’t say it would be a sin since it’s just a story. I’ve actually read them a long time ago, and they don’t necessarily portray them as paragons of virtue in the stories. They’re also no longer canon since Disney took over and they killed the Expanded Universe.

Two things:
  1. The canonicity of the story has no bearing on whether it’s morally licit;
  2. I know a couple of people in social groups who would challenge anyone to a duel for suggesting Legends aren’t canon or that the Disney continuity even exists at all 🤣
