Are the Deuterocanonical books really apocryphal?

Protestants make the point that the apocrypha books do not belong in the bible and say that Jesus did not refer to any of these books in his talks in the New Testament. I know there are several other books Jesus never referenced, but, nevertheless, they have a point… when were these books officially added to the Old Testament ( what year and by whom).
