Okay maybe “the divine comedy” comes to much to mind when I’m guessing that if it’s mentioned in “the divine comedy” then that belief was around in the middle ages. After all their’s expressions like “seventh heaven” and “cloud 9”.I’ve also heard about the concept being present in Islam but not so sure about it being present in Judaism and if it the idea of thier being levels in heck applies in either of those religions (by the way I say the “heck” instead of the other one b/c for me for the most part I dont feel comfortable saying the other one). Are those concepts of their beings levels in both those worlds applicable in modern Catholicism?.If so does it differ much from the description in “the divine comedy”?.Thank you very much so for your time.

Catholics might have believed in the seven circles of hell but it was never required to believe it. Just like they might have believed purgatory and hell were physical locations even though it wasn’t doctrine that they were physical, just that they exist. I guess it’s possible that some people still believe in Dante’s version of hell but they’d probably have to be pretty superstitious…and I don’t think a. Lot of Catholics focus on hell. We know it’s eternal separation from God. No fires or tortures could ever be worse or even come close to the pain of being eternally separated from God

I’m pretty sure Dante did not intend his Comedy to be taken as an actual roadmap to Hell, Purgatory, and Heaven. Not that can think of anything superstitious about his descriptions.

It certainly makes sense to me that there be different degrees of glory in Heaven and different degrees of misery in Hell.

I didn’t mean he intended it to be that way just that it’s possible some people took it that way
