Just going off my thread about Hell and friendships there (spoiler alert: they don’t exist!) are the souls in Purgatory friends witheachother?

I think they are actually. They are in sort of a fiery, unpleasent place and are in a certain amount of misery. But I think there is a large degree of compassion and love there, both for their fellow souls and the souls on earth. They may even have interesting conversations with eachother.

Any ideas?

I would assume so.
As members of the Body of Christ, we are united in love, right? Even the term Communion of Saints denotes friendship.
I know his work is fiction, but I really like Dante’s imaginative view of Purgatory. All of the souls there shout with tremendous joy (enough to shake Mt. Purgatory) as just one soul completes their purification and enters into Heaven.

Ah, now this is an interesting concept!

To me that sounds very plausible. We first know that there is no hatred in Purgatory, only painful purification. So the possibility of friendship is surely there. We can suffer in this life and find friendship in our suffering here, why couldn’t it be the same for Purgatory? Especially given the fact that everyone in Purgatory are aware of their assured eternal salvation.

Although, the question of how does their friendship effect each other comes to mind. Friends tend to alleviate suffering and burdens. The souls in Purgatory can’t pray for themselves, but does that mean they can do nothing for themselves? Hmm… 🤷

I guess 'cause here, when we’re suffering, we’re in physical contact with others who are suffering. So, we’re aware of their pain because we experience it physically through our senses.

That won’t be the case after death, when we are only ‘souls’ and no longer ‘bodies’. I’m guessing that’s why it wouldn’t be the ‘same’… 🤷

I suppose the most accurate answer is something like 🤷, or if there is a revelation.

But I’ll play a little.

Relationship.

People ‘get it’ when they see that striving for and keeping a relationship with God is the key.

Purgatory residents are in relationship with God.

So since relationship is not cut off by the person (rejecting God), I see the possibility that it is not a lonely burn (cleanse), like hell.
