Are there any exceptions for missing Mass?

My mother-in-law is elderly and homebound. She is unable to attend Mass, but an extraordinary minister of holy Communion visits to bring her Communion. She is convinced she is going to hell because she can’t attend Mass. If I could provide her some “official answer,” I know it would put her mind at ease. Any help you can provide is greatly appreciated.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church states:

The Sunday Eucharist is the foundation and confirmation of all Christian practice. For this reason the faithful are obliged to participate in the Eucharist on days of obligation, unless excused for a serious reason (for example, illness, the care of infants) or dispensed by their own pastor. Those who deliberately fail in this obligation commit a grave sin (CCC 2181, emphasis added).
