Are there any provisions for Catholics to get a vasectomy?

I am a married Catholic man with six children (two in heaven). My wife and I practiced NFP with great success with conceiving but not when we were trying not to get pregnant, even while following NFP protocol. Our last pregnancy ended in a miscarriage a year-and-a-half ago. My wife was very ill emotionally and physically during the pregnancy and in that lies the question. A local priest stated that it is acceptable to get a vasectomy based on my wife’s illness. What do you think?

That the priest is absolutely wrong. It is a matter of basic moral theology that no one may deliberately and directly sterilize himself or herself for any reason whatsoever. I urge you to contact the Couple to Couple League for assistance in practicing NFP in the most correct, conservative manner possible. But if you absolutely cannot risk another pregnancy, then the only other option you have is to abstain from marital relations entirely. If you must pursue complete abstinence from marital relations, then think of the necessary sacrifice as your fair share of the physical and emotional sacrifice necessary to protect your family.
