In looking through threads in the Vocation Forum, I couldn’t find any relating to the Secular Institute vocation.

If there are any members of any Secular Institutes, please step forward! Tell us the name of your Institute, its special charism, how you learned of your Institute, etc.

I believe this will spread the word of our vocation which so many people (even priests  ) have never heard of.

My own Secular Institute, the Lay Missionaries of the Passion, was founded by a Passionist priest under the charism of St. Paul of the Cross. We were founded in 1980 and received Papal approbation in 1999. We take the vows of Poverty, Chastity and Obedience, together with a fourth Passionist vow of devotion to the Passion of our Lord. We have a period of probation/formation which lasts 3 years, followed by temporary consecration (vows) for between 5 years but not more than 9 years. This is followed by perpetual vows and incorporation into our Institute forever. (I took my final vows in 1993.)

*“I wish that my heart could beat, that I could live and breathe only for Jesus, I wish that my tongue could utter no other name than that of Jesus; that my eye could see only Jesus; that my pen could write only about Jesus, and that my thoughts could soar to nothing but Jesus. I have often wondered where on earth there might be something on which I could center my love. But neither on earth nor in heaven do I find any such thing but only my beloved Jesus… I am the fruit of your passion, Jesus, born of your wounds. O Jesus, seek me in love; I no longer possess anything; you have stolen my heart…” *- St. Gemma Galgani

correct me if I am wrong, a member of a secular institute is an affiliate of a religious order who not only adopts aspects of their spirituality and supports them (like a Benedictine Oblate) but who also takes vows suitable for the lay state (not promises, but vows). this thread is one such discussion

No, there are some Secular Institutes that have no affiliation to a religious order and were founded with their own charism. I’m sorry, but I don’t know enough of other Institutes to tell you any names, but the U.S. Conference of Secular Institutes has info on all Institutes who have members in the USA.

The Lay Missionaries of the Passion were not only founded by a Passionist Priest, but after receiving Papal approbation, were aggregated to the Congregation of the Passion by the then Superior General.

Sometimes, names can be confusing too, such as (correct me if I’m wrong) Third Order Franciscans now call themselves Secular Franciscans, but as far as I understand, they’re still a Third Order.

Thank you for posting! Please would you share the joys and crosses of this vocation? I have never met anyone with this vocation and only learned what it was for the first time today! :o

I love the Passionists. Unfortunately, there isn’t any Passionist activity in my state (Kansas). do tell us more about your vocation though!!
