I live in Albuquerque where there are several Catholic churches. Are there parish boundaries? That is, should I go to the Catholic church closest to my home? Or may I choose any Catholic church in Albuquerque?

Thank you.

Yes, parish boundaries still exist. What the boundaries are depends on the local history of the parishes in that area. The parish boundaries at one time bound the people who lived within them to receive their sacraments at the parish responsible for those boundaries. Today Catholics are free to register and receive the sacraments at any Catholic church they choose. Parish boundaries exist today mainly for the purposes of outlining the pastoral responsibility of pastors and priests.
Ideally one would belong to the parish in which he or she resides.
