Are there to be any prophets after Jesus?

The Bible does not say that there won’t be any prophet after Jesus. What it points is that there might be one. 1 John 4:1-6 says to test every spirit, and even says that some are from God and some are not. A lot of verses warn about false prophets but no verse says that there will be no prophets from God after Jesus.

There have been countless prophets after Jesus. The Church herself considers prophecy to be a charism of the Holy Spirit. St. Paul, in his first letter to the Corinthians, wrote that the charism of prophecy was a much more useful charism than that of tongues, because the gift of prophecy could aid the community, while the charism of tongues was really only useful for personal prayer (unless one also had the ability to interpret such tongues).

The Bible says that the faith was delivered once for all to the saints. (Jude 3) Though prophets may predict future events and call believers to repentance, they cannot change Church teaching on faith and morals.

When asked, most Christians would say they believe the Bible.

But when probed further, and asked specifically about the wild, supernatural events that took place throughout the Old and New Testaments—those things—can they be taken literally.

That’s usually when the words symbolism, or allegory, or metaphorical get thrown around to avoid having to actually say ‘that’s too strange to be true.’ Did the Red Sea really part to allow the Jews to escape the Egyptians? Did one angel really strike down armies of men?

First Corinthians also suggests that prophecy is a gift that should be sought by all so that, as in the example that Paul gives, if an unbeliever comes into their midst, that they might be able to convert him.

The fundamental question is, what IS prophecy? The Catechism of the Catholic Church did not help, and I went to the Anchor Bible series volume on First Corinthians [at my local public library] which defined prophecy, as best as I can recall after two months, as being able to relay the message and meaning of scripture in a positive and persuasive way.

So (here it comes), this post is prophetic in the sense of explaining what prophecy is.

There are many prophets in Acts of the Apostles.

*Now in these days prophets came down from Jerusalem to Antioch. (Acts 11:27)

Now in the church at Antioch there were prophets and teachers, Barnabas, Simeon who was called Niger, Lucius of Cyre’ne, Man’a-en a member of the court of Herod the tetrarch, and Saul. (Acts 13:1)

And Judas and Silas, who were themselves prophets, exhorted the brethren with many words and strengthened them. (Acts 15:32)

At least seven prophets are named.
