Are there two wills or just God's free will and our misuse of it?

Was the word’s of Jesus in the garden, “Not my will but Yours?” a statement to humanity not an abandonment of one of the two wills?

interesting question.

In my humble opinion, God’s will and man’s free will are two very different things…and Jesus, who had both human and divine nature, may have been pointing that out in the passage you reference.

God’s will is truth, and man’s free will can (and more often than not, because of the Fall) be flawed.

When the two are in concert, all is well…when they are not, God’s will prevails…but fortunately, through His divine mercy (as evidenced by the Sacraments), our fallen nature does not mean we are not given an opportunity for conversion.

There are two wills God’s will and our free will. Sometimes our free will lines up with His but often it does not. Pretty much what happens every time we sin.

Jesus being fully God and fully man had two wills. The divine will and a human will. So I can see this as a statement to humanity. However, it isn’t a statement that you should abandon your will for God’s will. Jesus did not do that. What Jesus shows us here is that He fully embraced the plan of salvation and so surrendered His human will perfectly and continuously to the Father’s divine will.

Now there is a difference.

Surrender means to cease to resist. Basically Jesus knew the Father’s will was the perfect plan, it’s just His human will (fear of death) was ever present. So when He surrendered His will He didn’t give in, I’m sure He was still afraid, but He aligned His human will with the divine will to persevered with the Father’s plan.

Now Abandon means to give up completely. That would be like still believing your will is the correct way to go but giving into God anyway, instead of seeing that God’s plan is the best plan and aligning your will with His.

Not sure if that makes complete sense or not.

God Bless
