I hope this isn’t a dumb question but are we allowed to choose a patron saint outside of confirmation? I never got to choose one

Of course. I have several, depending on the Occassion and who I am praying for.

You should go with Saint Gemma because she is awesome. 🙂

(just an idea)

yes, you can. Its a pity you werent able to at Confirmation.

Blessings
Sure, My confirmation name is Sarah. I’ve never looked up St. Sarah. I was named after paternal Mother. I should look up the Saint. I’m fond of St. Bernadette and consider her a spiritual sister. I named my guardian angel Francis.
So, there you go. Just love God w your whole mind, strength and soul. Love your neighbor as you are to love yourself. Jesus wants to be your best friend, the lover of your soul.

My confirmation name is John. There are a lot of Saint Johns, obviously, so I suppose I have my pick. To be honest, I chose the name just because I liked it, not having any particular saint in mind, and nobody in the Church ever asked me to be more specific. These days I think of it as being St. John the Evangelist. I’ve always had an affinity for the (many) patron saints of writers, authors, and poets. Lately I’ve become very interested in St. Isidore the Farmer.

Lots of people pick lots of patron saints. Occupational saints, local saints, saints of the parish, saints of your birthday, saints of your name-day… and saints you just like, or who seem to be giving you hints now and then.

So no, you didn’t miss out!

Re: St. Sarah – Obviously, Sarah the wife of Abraham is the original St. Sarah! (Her feast day is on August 19 or October 9, depending on the calendar used.)

But there are quite a few others. There are a lot of different spellings, including “Sara” and “Sarra.” One of the more recent ones is Blessed Sara Salkahazi, a Hungarian lady who spoke out against the Nazis and died a martyr.

One of the older ones is St. Sarah the abbess, an early Christian and nun from the famous Egyptian monastic settlement of Skete, out in the desert. She is considered one of the “Desert Mothers.” (Here’s a page showing her icon.)

And of course, you probably already know that “Sarah” comes from the Hebrew for “female ruler” or “princess”, from the verb “sarar”, to rule. (“Sar” is a prince or male ruler.)

Blessings,
Thank you for references about a Saint Sarah. I never thought of Abraham and Sarah being Saints. Founders of monogamous God. Or God found them.
