Given that there are unimaginable billions of stars and planets, one would think that by now some creature or other would have long ago emitted some kind of transmission. The chances of picking up something other than light or radiation would be pretty large, it would seem, given all the years ā€œaliensā€ have had to generate something we could pick up. And yet, nothing.

Why Havenā€™t We Found Life Yet?

In spite of todayā€™s advanced technology and knowledge of our universe, weā€™ve yet to find any other examples of intelligent life in the universe. People often wonder, why havenā€™t we found anything yet?

Tarter* says there are two pieces to this puzzle.

The first part to consider is that the universe is vast and we havenā€™t been able to look everywhere yet. With our current technologies and the time weā€™ve dedicated to SETI, weā€™ve only searched an incredibly small portion of the universe for intelligent life.

Tarter explained it this way: if you set the search space equal to the size of the Earthā€™s oceans, weā€™ve only examined one glass of water from those oceans for intelligent life. Weā€™ve only looked at one small part of a very large picture.

The second reason why we may not have found intelligent life yet is because weā€™re stuck with the physics and the technology that we have in the 21st century.
