The word man and sexist have become almost synonymous in our culture these days. Being a man has become disreputable and somehow suspect. I am wondering what the word “sexist” means and how it is used in “the culture” of today. Also, is it possible for women to be sexist?

They definitely exist. I would say that many feminists are in fact sexist. Feminists tend to think that men are pigs who have no control over their sexual desires. It’s just an assumption that they have, but they never prove it. I have found, in my experiences, that trying to reason with a feminist or sexist is hopeless.

I’ve been in a work setting for 3 years where over 75% of the staff are women. Let me assure you that while the women have been almost nothing but good to me, women are most definitely sexist towards women.

Yeah…I don’t think so. One does not have care about sexual relations or however men get it on. Promoting opportunities for women is not sexist nor do men have to center themselves around the issue to validate themselves.

Yes, it is possible for a man or woman to be sexist.

Yes.

Except for those who aren’t.

Are white Christians racist?

Any generalization of a gender group is “sexist.”

So when a woman says that e.g. “All men are rapists,” she is making a sexist statement. There is nothing per se male about sexism.

Anyone (male or female) can be sexist. Just like anyone (young or old) can be ageist. Just like anyone (rich or poor) can be classiest. Just like anyone (black, white, yellow or brown) can be racist.

Anyone who “judges a book by it’s cover” it committing an "x"ist act.

Anybody can be prejudiced towards anybody. In my anecdotal experiences of life, women are more commonly sexist towards women than they are towards men.

The “men vs women” war happens and it is real and causes real harm in the world, but it is exacerbated online amid posts/threads that attract gratuitous amounts of attention and create an illusion of it being more widespread than it is. In the real world, in real schools, in real workplaces, people of opposite sexes generally agree and more frequently argue, fight, and judge members of the same sex. The same can be said of other groups, such as the fact that racism towards blacks is rampant and unchecked among the black community. It is a form of self-degradation that is causing severe harm, especially towards African American children and more vulnerable members. We do not yet live in a sophisticated enough century where prejudice towards ones own group is a major topic among the masses. By the 22nd or 23rd century, it’s possible this will be spoken of more. There is a certain social + psychological hierarchy that needs to be climbed, and it is difficult to talk about self-degradation while one is still contending with grievous events such as in Virginia recently.

If we follow closely Jesus’ commands and the writings of the saints, we can avoid participating in the terrible harm that judgment causes and become a font for Jesus to act in our world around us. Jesus loves us so much that he would have died if we were the only person in the world. We must remember that every time we are tempted by the enemy to judge our neighbor.

The difference being that women - or should I say feminists (however that term may be defined) - are rarely called on for having made such statements. Rather, such male-oriented generalizations are usually seen as the understandable by-product of oppression, and a healthy sign of repressive chains being broken.

Women can be sexist, men can be sexist.

It’s similar to how some people believe that white people cannot experience racism because they are in a position of power. The equivalent in this case would be that men cannot experience sexism because they are in a position of power. I disagree with both of those statements, though.

This isn’t incorrect, however, the more vulnerable a person is, the more damaged they will be from prejudice. So, if a man is affluent and secure in his job, he won’t be harmed as much from a woman being sexist towards him. It’s still an immoral act, but there are less temporal consequences. However, if he is vulnerable, such as trying to get a job to pay his bills for himself and his family, and lets say a female boss decided to not hire him because of his gender, then the sexism at work is causing severe harm to his life.

It is more common for women to be vulnerable than men, due in large part to the pandemic of single motherhood brought about via the sexual revolution, but that isn’t to say there aren’t vulnerable men in the world. It is also more common for historically disenfranchised demographics to be vulnerable.

Imagine reading a thread that says “Are men sexist?” and then tell me truthfully you wouldn’t find it at least a little bit unseemly. Asking a short, provocative question is similar to if you were making an offensive statement plainly. It’s a tactic used by celebrity magazines to get people to open the cover.

Not all men are Sexist ,

Not all women void of being sexist ,

I’v sure met a few that are,

It’s kinda like little man Syndrome,

I always found this strange. I grew up in a very conservative area where feminists were evil and patriarchy was expected. And the idea that men were pigs who had no control over their sexual desires was almost unquestioned.

In fact, one of the things that attracted me to feminism was that they didn’t do that.

A decent working definition of sexist might be helpful to this discussion. It is an emotionally charged word, and I imagine it means different things to different people. E.G. Is recognizing almost universal attitudes regarding members of the opposite sex, sexist??

Some men are sexist. Some men are generally not sexist, but may make the occasional joke or comment that some people think is sexist.

Some women are sexist. Some women are generally not sexist, but may make the occasional joke or comment that some people think is sexist.

I would define “sexist” as genuinely believing that the opposite sex is seriously deficient or incompetent in some major ways. For example, believing that women generally can’t do math, or that men generally can’t run a household.
