Are you an Extraordinary Minister of the Eucharist?

Now that really is nit picking 😦
Not really.

I’m a Diaconal student myself and the instructions in Redemptionis Sacramentum were made very clear to us
[154.] As has already been recalled, “the only minister who can confect the Sacrament of the Eucharist in persona Christi is a validly ordained Priest”.[254] Hence the name “minister of the Eucharist” belongs properly to the Priest alone. Moreover, also by reason of their sacred Ordination, the ordinary ministers of Holy Communion are the Bishop, the Priest and the Deacon,[255] to whom it belongs therefore to administer Holy Communion to the lay members of Christ’s faithful during the celebration of Mass. In this way their ministerial office in the Church is fully and accurately brought to light, and the sign value of the Sacrament is made complete.
Most especially since the Holy Father reiterated in his recent Exhortation that we should follow these instructions and refered to this one directly.
By definition, it CAN’T be nit picking if the Holy See saw fit to issue instructions on the matter, and then reiterate those instructions recently.

Deacon Ed, You really should know better.

You are a Ordinary Minister of Holy Communion, unless you were also Ordained to the priesthood, Deacons cannot confect the Eucharist, so they are not ministers of the Eucharist.

Redemptionis Sacramentum specifically stated that the correct terms be used in this matter ( and unlike the glass flagons, I don’t think there is contrary particular law being debated in LA on this one too)

Therefore, as a Deacon, would you not feel obligated to follow the Vatican’s instructions on this matter?
The terminology police strikes again! Please be nice as I am certain the fine Deacon was not making a statement with the intention to go directly against *Redemptionis Sacramentum. *Please remove that log from your eye before finding the fleck within the eyes of others. Your halo of charity is corroded. 😊

Kell,

One geneally doesn’t refer to the Holy See as ‘terminlogy police’. It’s not nice.

I have no problem with the terminology and a few of us stand corrected in the words that were used (which were mentioned with the best possible intentions). It is the less than charitable way in which you correct others that I personally find offensive.

In what way was I uncharitable?

Could you paste specific examples and we can discuss them?

Believe me, it’s NOT my intent to cause offense. This isn’t exactly an ideal medium for conveying intent.

I will say that I DO hold Deacon Ed to a higher standard. He has even more Sacramentology than I do, so I DO expect him to set an example.

The Clergy speak on behalf of the Church, so they have to be VERY careful in how they phrase things. Theological mistakes, especially in things like homilies (which this is, of course, not) , can damage souls.

I do understand what the common title for an EMHC is, but the Vatican has made it very clear on what it SHOULD be called, and the clergy must be the ones setting an example.
It is a high standard, which I am expected to adhere to now, and so is Deacon Ed…

And was there anything wrong with doing it nice and politely by PM ?

Deacon Ed and I have had PM’s before ( very nice ones); about the particulars of Redemptionis Sacramentum even. He’s a great guy and a wonderful model for us deacon ‘wannabes’. 🙂

But this issue doesn’t just apply to clergy. The Vatican has made it known what the correct terms are (as has the USCCB), and once we are made aware of that, we ALL have an obligation to obey.

Yes, I am an EMHC. But I am not participating presently due to some abuses directly related to the EMHC role. Our EMHC purify, we use glass cups and the wine is consecrated in the flagon and the precious blood is then poured into the cups, and 2 EMHC stand at Fathers side while he takes communion. Our Priest says he is doing according to our Bishop. I wrote the Bishop and after many months I finally have in writing that EMHC are to not purify. Why the Bishop doesn’t alert all the parishes concerning this change I don’t know! All our parishes continue with the abuses. This is such an important part of the Mass. It is so easily fixed. I believe it is up to the parishioners to help dignify the Mass. Things are getting out of hand. Our Masses should all be the same as far as rubrics. We need to speak up, respectfully of course. Thanks, I need to vent.

I chose “other”. I am an EMHC and I’m thinking about resigning from this ministry, which is terribly overused at my parish. We have a pastor, associate pastor, one priest in residence and a deacon, and I have never seen any of them come over to distribute communion if they were not the presider (other than concelebrated masses such as Holy Thursday). I have even seen our pastor sit down when his plate is empty and let the EMHC’s continue to distribute. I am tired of the abuses, but on the other hand I am torn because I might be more effective in stopping the abuses if I stay part of the ministry. The abuse that troubles me the most is after Mass during the purification of vessels (which is always done by the EMHC’s). It is often a party atmosphere with people chatting and talking. They’ve forgotten that the Lord is present until all crumbs of the host and all the Precious Blood are consumed.

Any comments on my dilemma would be appreciated.

I understand what you mean and I am really sorry that you have to go through such a dilemma like this. It bothers me when priests sit down and the EMHCs continue on. I was at a church on Suunday night (went to mass on Saturday, but a girl called me up… her car was wrecked earlier in the week and she couldn’t get to Palm sunday mass, so I have her a ride to a new church.) The priest there sat down before (there were 7 EMHCs) before about 4 of them were finished and he purify the vessels at the end (if that is what it is called). It really bothered me.

A couple weeks ago, I was planning to get Diocesean (sp) traing to become a EMHC, but something came up… (the holy spirit hit me and I randomly talked a woman at the church, I kind of know her) and she told me about an “encounter God’s call” weekend at a local seminary and I went there instead and learned about the priestly call, and so I might be a priest. So I am still not a EMHC.

Last month I joined Youth-discernment.com and on the forum there, there were people discussing that EMHC were used way to much and I began to realize that I would much prefer to have only priests do it and not EMHC (only use EMHC in the most extreme cases). So in your case, pvmkmyer, I really dunno because you have three priests that at your parish. (you should use maybe one EMHC, unless you need like 8 people total to give out communion).

So I guess we need more priests! 👍

My priest had me deputized as an EMHC and a lay reader, but rarely uses me. Because I serve the parish on the music staff, I am not allowed to be “regularly” scheduled in either ministry, so as to not create a schedule problem. I am often called upon to assist in the Summers at daily Mass, and on those rare occassions where I’m not playing on the weekend, if Father needs an extra EMHC, I come out of the congregation to assist.

Father felt it would be helpful for me to be deputized in these ministries, and since we’re discerning whether or not I am called to the Diaconate, he felt that this gives me a little extra boost in my discernment. It’s a good exercise in humilty, that’s for sure!

Epsilon Omega:

Thanks for the (name removed by moderator)ut. At my church we use as many as 11 EMHCs at mass. It’s completely unnecessary, in my opinion, since only about 350 people receive communion. The rest of the procession is made up of the infernal small kids who want a “blessing” from one of the EMHC’s. On top of that, even though we have a break in the aisles half-way back in the church, everyone now has to come to the front so we can “all receive from the same table” – because after all, it’s not an altar of sacrifice anymore, we’re at a dining room table.

Unfortunately our pastor is very weak and lets the liturgy folks do pretty much whatever they want, and our associate pastor, who is very good and orthodox, is about to leave for a new parish in a month or two.

Can’t wait for that motu proprio from the pope to free the TLM!

pvmkmyer,

That sounds crazy, but I have a nice priest who does everything very well, in my humble opinion. We might have between 150-300 people at mass, but we still only have the priest, and 3 EMHCs. We need to get some more tradition conservative priests.

I am sorry to hear about your problems and I can just hope for the best for you and the parish. I guess you can just maybe talk to the priest about it and then pray like crazy :gopray2:

Its been said that on any given Sunday in the U.S., 75% of all Catholics receiving communion do so from someone who is not a priest.

Besides, what is so “extra ordinary” on any given Sunday that EM’s are needed ?

I see it as another effort of the dark forces within the Church to do away with the Priesthood all together.

Can you provide evidence to back up your statistic?

And what’s wrong with a Catholic receiving communion from a deacon?

Might I suggest that you go to your Pastor about the abuses. If that doesn’t work write to your Bishop. If the Bishop takes his time with responding please persist. Maybe we can help move things in a more positive direction with persistence at each of our parishes until they are persuaded into doing things according to proper rubrics. If we all do it then this will cause change.
