Are you required to keep the fast before Communion if you can’t receive due to not being in a state of grace? For instance, is it okay to go get lunch and then just hear the Mass if you’re not in grace, or is it still against the “spirit” of the fast, even if you don’t intend to receive Holy Communion in the first place?

Thanks!

Code of Canon Law (emphasis added):
Can. 919 §1. A person who is to receive the Most Holy Eucharist is to abstain for at least one hour before holy communion from any food and drink, except for only water and medicine.
The fast is only for those who will be receiving communion.
