This question is meant to be a bit open ended. Feel free to explain your choice in the comments.

Not really. This country certainly has been in worse situations; Civil War, World Wars, slavery, etc. There are places around the world where things are worse than recent history, but that has always been the case. Life will go on and change is inevitable.

I think there’s a difference between the pace of change and the actual situation we are in that affects people’s perceptions. It may also be affected by how many talking heads you listen to in one day. 🙂

Of course many are. Abortions are routinely performed. Marriage is being attacked. Many people are still starving in a technologically advanced society that is increasingly becoming very hedonistic.

But God loves us all and he is very merciful.I wait in joyful hope for the coming of Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior!

Abortion has been on a steady decline for decades, it’s certainly not getting worse:

Marriage being under attack really depends on your point of view, some might see it as being expanded.

We as Christians are not really supposed to worry, are we? Jesus did say, do not be anxious about your life. I know we need to care and do our best to make society better, but worrying indicates fear or perhaps a lack of confidence that things will turn out ok in the end, am I wrong?

I mean, well, even during the times of Nero and Diocletian? Would we have been permitted to actively worry, with our will, I mean? Our gut may be a different matter. (Ever had a squid who is hungry, fast, and 10 X your size trying to makes a tasty meal of you, now that might be cause for worry! )

I’m going with the point of view of Jesus and His Church, the Catholic Church. Marriage is definitely under attack. The Vatican just hosted a multi faith conference upholding and affirming what marriage and the family is. In doing so they are saying what it is not.

As far as worrying about the future…
Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your minds, so that you may discern what is the will of God—what is good and acceptable and perfect.Rom 12:2

There is some difference, I think between being “concerned” and being “worried”.

Yes, I’m concerned.

Hi Jamal,

No, you are right in a sense–about not worrying (and not living in fear, either). However, I personally think that we can be concerned for what is happening on this planet, as we are all connected to each other.

I can imagine having a squid come after you…

I was in Yellowstone Park years ago, and came face-to-face with a bison.

I didn’t see it in a dark, wooded area, and that was enough to scare me. It wasn’t going to move. It just stood there, staring at us.

I was hiking with a friend, and we finally just ended up running! Probably not the best thing to do, but when you are young and afraid, you just bolt–and run! Run first, think later! 😊

Surely a bison would have been merciful to an Old Gray Mare? But perhaps they’re not known for their mercy, and as you say, you were not so old at the time. 🙂

In real life, I was almost trampled by a rather large bull moose who charged me once in a Montana forest. I did not have time to be scared. But I was concerned enough to get out of the way as quickly as I possibly could have if not a little more so. As Kenny once said, “you gotta know when to hold 'em and know win to fold 'em.” He had me outweighed perhaps 20:1 not to mention his m :bigyikes: mentum, I might add.

(Sorry for the digression.)

Well, marriage is losing its meaning and is on the decline. Family is on the decline. The sexual revolution has overtaken pretty much the whole culture. And fertility rates are declining everywhere, with implications for declining populations, aging populations, unsustainable social security and welfare systems, and economic stagnation. The next looming crisis coming upon us is the nearly intractable problem of depopulation. (See Jonathan Last’s book “What to Expect When No One’s Expecting—America’s Coming Demographic Disaster.”

But aside from the increasing sexual and social chaos, restrictions on religious liberty, and demographic disaster, I’m pretty optimistic.

i think worry for the future comes from a lack of perspective on the past. even during the high middle ages. when christianity allegedly ruled europe. you had the holy roman emperor with muslim concubines and appointing his own invalid priests. jesus promised a spiritual battlefield. and these words apply to every generation. there are some things that we dont have to deal with today. we are blessed with spectacular popes and with missions flourishing on continents previously undreamed of. in other areas. its hard

I think I am more worried about the present, as it is the roadmap to the future.

60 years ago, smut like Playboy was just starting to gain ground, but was largely hidden from view (literally). Today pornography seems to be the fastest growing segment of visual media, available within seconds on your computer, tablet, or even your (not so) smart phone.

And pornography outed no longer gives rise to any moral dilemma; when a young actress’ account was hacked and her nude photos sent out to cyberspace and to anyone who wished to see, her answer was that she was sending nude photos across the US to her “boyfriend” because if she didn’t send nude photos, well, he would ;turn to pornography (missing the elephant in the room - or the two or three standing there trumpeting). She had absolutely no clue as to the irony of her comment. And the media? They focused on her “invasion of privacy”; they too had absolutely no clue about the elephants in the room.

ABC, in the guise of the Pill, worked and continues to work overtime to reduce women to men’s sex toys. In turn, it has given rise to serial fornication, shacking up, a significant drop in marriages, people getting married later and later in life, and undoubtedly has contributed to the number of “no fault” divorces, And in turn, we are seeing a rise in the number of unwed mothers giving birth. Hoorah to them for having the moral courage to not abort (and yes, the statistics are down - now we kill only 40,000+ kids per year, instead of 50,000+ - I am sure the 40,000+ are seriously delighted in the reduction).

We face an enemy which openly and loudly calls the US the Great Satan - in large part on our moral issues (or to put it bluntly, our blithely immoral behavior) and vows to destroy us. and those who think they are incapable are deliriously and insanely mistaken, as this group has insidiously and extremely effectively re-defined warfare.

We have the major economies of the world far more interdependent than they have ever been, to the point the mind of man remembereth not. And a significant number of those economies are in more trouble than the average person on the street has any clue of; should several of them go into a tail spin, they will take down the economy of everyone else.

The governments of Europe have gone far more socialistic than the US - which is currently trying to play catch-up, and as a wag said, socialism, or “spending other people’s money” works until you run out of money. And the governments in a number of European countries came perilously close within the last couple of years.

You may shrug your shoulders at that, but only if you are ignoring some serious facts: almost all European countries are either at a negative birth/death (replacement) rate, or are exceedingly close to it. Add to that fact that they are not birthing enough people to replace those dying, is the fact that in their liberal immigration policies, they are admitting significant numbers of people whose birth rate is well above the minimum replacement rate - and are you ready? They are part and parcel of those claiming the US (and Europe) is the Great Satan. They may not have to send suicide bombers into public squares to ignite panic; they just have to out-produce children for about 2 generations and they will have control of the vote. Couple the vote with some focused terrorism, and the constitutions of those countries won’t be worth the paper they are written on.

People call me hysterical (I am not) and say I don’t know what I am talking about, and that it simply is not true. I am simply giving the facts. But Relativism is becoming stronger and stronger in the public weal, and coupled with liberalism, results in ignoring any facts which don’t coincide with that individual (or group) world view.

And that is just a running start.

Absolutely. We’re retrogressing. We got a whole bunch of imams who are as lost as a ball in tall grass.

I voted “no” simply because I don’t really know when our moral decline will stop and how much lower they will go. I’m convinced that our society here in the good ole USA will continue to decline until they end abortion. Until then, things will just get worse for many. So, why worry about it? It is inevitable. But my “no” is because I try to remain detached from the doings of society in general. Once I close my front door, it has little effect on me and I leave the world behind and enter into the rest of Christ when I’m here in my home. It used to bother me much more, but then I realized I was stressing over something I cannot change. I still pray over many societal issues, i.e. the end of abortion, and similar issues, but I don’t worry about any of it. Worrying I’ve found is useless except that it tends to sap my strength and causes wrinkles. I gave worrying up for Lent and liked the peace so much, I decided to keep it. Yeah. I’m the only one who can really disturb my own peace. I’m getting smarter about things, finally. Feels pretty good too. Thank You Jesus for wisein’ me up!

Hello OGM2.

When you’re as big as a Bison, all you have to do is stare! Thanks for sharing.
