I am a member of another forum filled with a lot of different kinds of people that I also know in “real” life. There is one woman of whom I have known for many years who always instigates religious-related threads and expresses her interest for others to add to it. A lot of younger protestant Christians are members of this forum, and it’s almost like this woman is trying to get them in to her web. One of my very dear friends admitted to me that through her posts and the additional posts of other athiest or (loosely labeled) “Christians” that she has found her faith faltering.

Basically, this woman will say that she respects everyone, but if you express your own beliefs she will rip it apart despite how many truths you can argue. She brings up controversial stuff like homosexuality the churches beliefs on premaritual sex and basically argues them til shes blue in the face. I continually respond to her with scriptures and explanations as I know it, but sometimes it’s extremely hard and fruitless, but my only reason for continuing to reply to her is for the sake of other young people like my friend who may read it and start to feel the foundations of their faith shaking.

She calls herself a Christian and takes huge offense if someone tries to tell her that you can’t be a Christian and believes the things that she believes. (Basically take what you want from the bible and toss aside the rest) She is under the impression that anyone who is part of the church is really stupid and is giving their life away to man-made rules, rather than God’s … I find this to be infuriating.

At the moment I am trying to explain to her the origin of the Bible and how we know it is God’s true word. (Her argument is that the bible wasnt even around when Jesus was born, so it’s obviously just Man’s interpretation) …

So I was hoping to perhaps seek some well-thought guidance to this matter because I am at the end of my tether. I don’t want to be rude to her, and I don’t want to stop sticking up for my Church and my Jesus and laying the truth down for those who may not see it or who may be sceptical.

I really appreciate any help 🙂

If you ‘google’ search “In Defense of catholicism” i think you will find plenty of ammo to use. There is one website with that name that covers everything about the Catholic church from the Sacraments and clergy, to ethics and scripture. Its all there. Try that out.

Yeah, I’ve had a bit of a look around, but a lot of the info isn’t very direct to what I’m trying to defend.

I have the same problem with a fellow who seem like boudhist on a forum I am on. Ever since I joined this msn group I noticed that he has a serious hatred against organized religion and catholicism in particular. I noticed so early that I asked him if he had had any conflict with any catholic authority or something. He said no. If I post a message, he will brake it into parts like sentences. And he will start responding to every sentences separately intentionally eliminating the context. I asked him why he do that. He knows that something have to be read in context. And his strategy is precisely to confused the context.

I don’t know why some people behave like this. His is strongly against ‘doctrine’. He will use this word many time whenever he happen to be responding to my ‘catholic’ posts. But he himself is involved in preaching that new age doctrine of ‘within’. I have explained to him that he is himself a doctor like others. Just because he is not listed in an organized religion does not make him less a doctor preaching some doctrine. yet, he manage to deceive people and this is very frustrating.

So I get your point. One day, I actually stopped participating to that group because it was driving me crazy. One verses worked me up:

“6 Give not that which is holy to dogs; neither cast ye your pearls before swine, lest perhaps they trample them under their feet, and turning upon you, they tear you.” Matthew 7

So I stoped using Bible or CCC quotes because I realised that I could be actually desacracating them unknowingly thus doing sacrilege by exposing the sacred to people who are not in search of truth but trying to make themselves some kinds of gods.

So now after coming back after few months, I will try to respond simply with my own ideas. If someone asks more (this will be a person who is truly thirsty for truth) then I organized a separate web site where we can deal with the matter.

So I understand your worry for those young people who could fall for those lies. It is a real problem. Just keep it simple. You can always prove her wrong and explain the truth to whomever is interested I guess.

God bless

Alain

This woman is very confused.

She says that the Church is nothing but made-up, man-made rules, and that the Bible is nothing but man’s interpretation.

The Church didn’t have the scriptures immediately after Jesus’ death, but it did pass on the faith. The Church didn’t have the NT before Christ was born, because, well, Christ hadn’t been born yet. Remind her that the NT is all about Jesus’ birth, life, and death, and that it couldn’t have been written before it happened. The Church did have the scriptures that we now call the OT.

Now, this woman is against the Church and the Bible. So from where does she get her Christianity? It has to come from somewhere. If not the Church, which existed before the Bible, or from the Bible, which the Church codified, then where?

Save your breath. She’s just one of those many, many, many people online who are self-righteous, arrogent, proud, and so full of hate that the only thing you can do for them is prayer. I agree it is infuriating, but we gotta remember to imitate Gods Mercy. It’s hard, I know, but nothing is impossible through, with, and in God.

Godsprincess, what exactly is it that you are trying to defend about the Catholic church?

Who owns the forum? Who is the moderator? If it’s not a religion forum, perhaps you could encourage the rules to be set so that religion is not a topic that may be discussed or else encourage the moderator to take an aggressive stance against her posts when they become beligerant rants.

In absence of some action on the part of the forum, I would cease my relationship with such a person and such a forum and encourage others to do the same.

Life is way too short.
