Thanks for making that well formed.

What convention is that? I’d like to learn it but googled around without any success.

why not just be very fair and first read the book before jumping to faulty conclusions - twinc
btw in his thorough search Brunton explored many avenues and cul-de-sacs and as regards the occult he warns thus “it is here needful to utter some further words of warning.Whether in the East or the West much pernicious nonsense, riddled by charlatanry, poisoned by commercialism and rendered futile by superstition,is being passed off as mysticism or occultism.Whoever plunges into mysticism and occultism without at some stage or other pausing to pass through some of the philosophic discipline,to acquire the rudiments of its protective metaphysical and moral qualifications, exposes himself to possible errors and deception. A number of strange, silly or sinister movements illustrate the freak forms which mysticism has taken when wrongly understood by its votaries and unscrupulously abused by its champions. At best they are tainted with the fact that they promise but can never give man his highest happiness ; at their worst they are tainted with serious psychic danger. The philosophically disciplined student’s reason must remorselessly cut through their false or insane suggestions like a sharp-edged sickle. Again, whether at the beginning, the middle or even toward the end of his quest, the aspirant must beware of glib exploiting teachers for it is much safer to walk alone than to walk in such company and thus in very truth he becomes his own teacher” - twinc

It is a simplified formulation of the principal of contingency from “A Treatise on God as First Principle” by Bl. Duns Scotus.

The whole quote is a most excellent warning about creationism 🙂 - let’s not go there

  1. I can’t read everything, and after seeing what others think (e.g. the quote in #37), he would be at the bottom of my list and then some.
From some real philosophy I have read and studied I have come to the conclusion that in reality we live in a mental and spiritual dimension but have fallen into[maya]an illusion of material and physical - hence the magic of the mind and mind over matter - more later or direct on personal request - twinc
  1. I’m underwhelmed by your “real philosophy” of magic - it’s just not my cup of tea, leaving to one side that it’s false.
Anyhow, back to the first cause?

so do you know something about first cause,do tell us or perhaps be told and as regards quote 37 why not consider quote 42 from someone who has first hand knowledge and knows - twinc

how can we possibly come to such a way out, weird and wacky conclusion - come now let us reasonably reason together - for creationism see www.allaboutcreation.org - twinc
I substituted. Since you went to the trouble of transcribing the quote, for which thanks, here’s the edit to show how I read the excellent warning. Incidentally, and to be pedantic, I took the word psychic in the passage as “(especially of an illness) of the mind rather than the body” (Cambridge dictionary) rather than its alternative weird and wacky meaning.
It is here needful to utter some further words of warning. Whether in the East or the West much pernicious nonsense, riddled by charlatanry, poisoned by commercialism and rendered futile by superstition, is being passed off as Christianity. Whoever plunges into Christianity without at some stage or other pausing to pass through some of the philosophic discipline, to acquire the rudiments of its protective metaphysical and moral qualifications, exposes himself to possible errors and deception. A number of strange, silly or sinister movements illustrate the freak forms which Christianity has taken when wrongly understood by its votaries and unscrupulously abused by its champions. Of course I will debate it with you, because I see in men like Brunton the very things he warns against. But it is off-topic on this thread, and private messages would not work because it needs to be aired openly so that others can contribute.

By all means start a thread.

 I already posted my comments, as for Brunton see previous post.

I too have posted my comments and call it a day but pray that those who stumble across Brunton and the hidden teaching and come to mock and sneer and jeer stay on to pray in real awe and wonder at a Creator[God]and his creation and thus strengthen their faith and not diminish it - twinc
