Here’s an article about the history of ouija boards, and it gets a little into the science behind how they work. The question that the article doesn’t really address, and that science can’t, is whether the ouija is the work of the subconscious or of other unseen forces.

One could easily conclude that the subconscious mind controls the planchette if one discounts the potential for otherworldly spirits. On the other hand, if one firmly believes in the influence of the spiritual realm, one would quickly reject the notion that planchette moves because of our subconscious minds.
