Actually what it did was highlight unlawful discrimination on a then-hotbed topic. I don’t see it as an agenda movie in the least, though there have been plenty since.

Philadelphia was not so much to do with the character’s sexual orientation as his struggling to come to terms with his AIDS. Not an exclusively gay disease.
