Almost the same question asked at a Mass I attended last year. “How many here want to go to heaven” and all hands went up. Then the Priest asked, “How many want to go now”, and only a few older people kept their hands up.

Myself, I’m trying to use Advent for a personal conversion. I’ve gotten off track and I know it.

I think a lot of priests have lost sight of just how ugly death is, and how absent monumental grief or physical suffering, no-one is “ready” for it.

Aliveness is human; death is the negation and failure of all we are.

Do you remember the physical suffering when you were born. You gotta do the sting at both ends of life

My mother was quite happy the week before she died and when Mum and the family were told she would not last out the weekend, there were no famous last words from Mum. When we visited her over the weekend, Mum’s reaction was as if she would be coming home with us all on Monday. She went home Sunday, Palm Sunday - and died a Peaceful death not very long after Holy Viaticum.

Where personal death is concerned, we cannot know how, when or why…nor internal disposition at the time. It could be instantaneous death without warning, we may have a period of dying before death conscious or unconscious. What we can do is every day and moment be prepared to face The Lord at death.
