A great opinion piece by Fr. James Livingston, lead chaplain for Faith in Action support group, the local chapter of that prochastity ministry for men and women with same-sex attraction in the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis.

“…Minnesota citizens, you can support traditional marriage and be a friend to persons with same-sex attractions. It’s not an “either/or” issue.”

Commentary by Fr. John Zuhlsdorf:

Thanks for the timely sharing of the wonderful article by Fr. Livingston. You did a great service in posting it on this forum where enough members, Catholic and non-Catholic, are greatly misled by enough who insist on the notion that if one is against same sex marriage, he/she is necessarily unaccepting of true charity and justice towards homosexuals.

The incorrect notion that homosexuality is genetic is also being propagated even if, up to this time, the etiology of homosexuality has not been definitively established. It is still not known if it comes from nature or nurture or if it is inborn or a preference. The best any scientist can offer is that there is no one answer, and no better theory other than sexual orientation is caused by a complex interaction between environmental, cognitive, and anatomical factors, shaping the individual at an early age.

American Microbiologist Richard Deem asserted that attempts to find a “gay gene” have never identified any gene or gene product that is actually associated with homosexual orientation, with studies failing to confirm early suggestions of linkage of homosexuality to region Xq28 on the X chromosome. He stated that the question of genetic influences on sexual orientation could be definitively answered by using DNA microarray technology; however, no such studies are planned or in progress. If true, it is most curious why no studies are being done.

Yes. In other words, it is extremely likely that some people absolutely do have a strong biological component to their SSA, while others undoubtedly have strong SSA (or attraction to SS acts) in the absence of the same biological compenents. It just depends.
