My husband and I have been trying for a year to have a baby. My sister’s are frustrated w/us b/c we’re not willing to try artificial means. Their argument is that if we have a baby this way, then obviously God wanted us to have one. In other words, if God thought it was wrong, then he wouldn’t bless us w/a child. I’m not sure how to argue that one???

Firstly, have you been charting your fertility?

Do you know why you haven’t conceived?

If it were me (and I am infertile, also) I would chart first to learn about my own body and its cycles, however whacky they may be.

Then I would seek the help of my OB, who would most likely refer me to a fertility specialist. This doctor would run tests to determine several things: who was the infertile partner and what is the matter. Then they will see if that problem can be corrected. Oftentimes it can be corrected and the couple can conceive without ever having to resort to more artificial means.

If not, as was the case with me, then the fertility doctor will most likely prescribe a fertility drug such as Clomid. This drug will make you ovulate but will not “get” you pregnant. As your sisters said, the rest will still be up to God.
I have used Clomid three times now and gotten pregnant each time on the first try, for which I am extremely grateful.

This info might be old news to you and you may have already done a lot of it. If so, I apologize!

Good luck to you and keep me posted on how things are going.

Carrie - Thanks. I’ve actually done most of that. I’m not discouraged yet but I’m just not sure how to answer my sisters’ insistence that God wouldn’t bless anyone w/a baby if artificial means weren’t ok.

Well…even though I’m more in your sister’s camp on this one, you could argue that if a child is born of rape or out of wedlock, God’s not really thrilled with those processes either.

You might ask your sister how far she is willing to apply that logic to other situations, using immoral methods to try and achieve a moral end…for example:

Is it ok then to euthanize a dying person so we can harvest their organs for the person who is dying waiting on that transplant?

Is God blessing a woman who is raped when she conceives a child?

Maybe she hasn’t really thought about what she is saying, hopefully she will reconsider.
