Abortion Art - Chinese ‘Artist’ Defends Grafting Fetus Head onto Bird’s Body

BEIJING, August 12, 2005 (LifeSiteNews.com) - A Chinese artist who has attached the head of an aborted baby to the body of a bird in the name of art is defending his work after a Swiss gallery removed the piece from a collection of Chinese works on display in Bern.

A visitor to the museum, Adrien de Riedmatten, filed a complaint Monday with Bern’s District Attorney, after viewing the controversial piece at the Bern Fine Art Museum. “I want to know where this baby comes from and if it was killed for this work,” de Riedmatten said. “We know about the problems of late-term abortions in China and we have the right to ask ourselves questions. We owe a minimum amount of respect to the dead,” his complaint stated. “I think it is reasonable to question the ethics of this piece of art.”

For his part, ‘artist’ Xiao Yu claims, “It’s precisely because I respect all life that I did this. The bird and the foetus both died because there was something wrong with them. I thought putting them together like this was a way for them to have another life.”

Jim Hughes, Vice President of the International Right to Life Federation commented on the display to LifeSiteNews.com saying, “The staggering Chinese abortion rate of over 6.3 million per year or more than 17,000 per day, along with the government sponsored dehumanization of unborn children leads to this kind of horrific display. When children are considered no better than animals then they can be made objects.”

Amnesty International and other human rights agencies have detailed shocking actions by Chinese family planning officials such as drowning newborn children when they are discovered born without a license.

Unwilling to have the controversy overshadow the “Mahjong” exhibit of Chinese art, curator Bernhard Fibicher pulled the piece. The museum has planned a symposium for August 22, including artists and ethics experts, to decide if the piece should be re-exhibited.

Yu, who named the piece “Ruan,” which is a combination of Chinese letters derived from the names of a variety of animals, added the eyes of a rabbit to the fetal head.

Saint Michael the Archangel,
defend us in battle.
Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil.
May God rebuke him, we humbly pray;
and do Thou, O Prince of the Heavenly Host -
by the Divine Power of God -
cast into hell, satan and all the evil spirits,
who roam throughout the world seeking the ruin of souls.

Amen.

This being China, with its “one child” policy, I have to wonder if the only thing “wrong” with that baby was that she was female. 😦

I looked up a news article on this (complete with a rather horrifying picture), and apparently the museum displaying this “art” removed it from the exhibit after determining it was genuine.

Opposition to Fetal Head Grafted onto Bird Body “Art” Display a Matter of “Taste,” Claims Legal Expert
BERN, Switzerland, September 2, 2005 (LifeSiteNews.com) – A panel of experts has concluded that there is no reason to exclude a controversial piece of “art” – depicting the head of an unborn baby grafted onto the body of a bird – from a collection of Chinese works on display in a Swiss museum, with one legal expert claiming opposition to the piece is a matter of “taste.”

The piece was removed from the Mahjong art exhibit at the Bern Fine Art Museum after a visitor filed a complaint last month with Bern’s District Attorney. “I want to know where this baby comes from and if it was killed for this work,” said Adrien de Riedmatten.

A panel of experts comprised of philosophers, legal experts, theologians, and art historians decided August 22 that there were no ethical or legal grounds for preventing the piece from being displayed.

If it makes people recognise the humanity of the child rather than being a ‘product of conception’ then maybe God will bring some good out of the double atrocity.

I have an article about foetal remains on my website. The website is designed to educate people who otherwise ‘switch off’ when talking to ‘pro-lifers’

Interesting that within one decade of the stopping of saying this prayer at mass abortion became legal.

A pro-life newspaper the Interim arrived yesterday and I was able to see a photo of what this controversy is all about. The artist, not satisfied with placing an infant’s head on what looks like the body of a plucked chicken, replaced its’ eyes with that of a rabbit’s. Interesting to note, China for all its documented human rights abuses would not allow such a degrading exhibition in the name of art.

As an artist who has dabbled with surrealism earlier in my career and created a few disturbing images, I think the same artistic statement could have been made using different media without desecrating human remains. This is every bit as sacrilegious as displaying the crucified Lord in a frame filled with urine.

The elite of the art world are more concerned with shock value than aesthetics and have created a culture of the ugly which is supposed to redefine our innate sense of beauty. Unfortunately, it is not only judges, politicians and the media which show a predilection for changing definitions and manipulating language.
