I had somebody ask me how I, “Reconciled the many inconsistencies in the Gospels?” How would somebody explain these?

I’m a former Catholic. If I were still a Catholic, I would respond to the person in question that the inconsistencies in the Gospels actually indicates that it is authentic more than in a case if the Gospels were entirely consistent. Think about it. If the Gospels were entirely consistent, then that would indicate that it was merely the work of one man. That would make the Gospels a lie, as the Gospels are really titled as “The Gospel according to…”. This obviously means that the different writers would have had different perspectives. For them to not have had different perspectives would have made it forgery.

This is obviously an interesting point when you analyse it much more closely, because it proves Catholicism’s point that the Bible is not to be interpreted as a “history book” or “science book”. The core of each of the Gospels are the same - the proclamation of the “Good News”. The nuances between each of the Gospels just displays human fallibility in recalling events.

I would tell them, that if four different people from four different cultures at four different periods of time were friends with the same person and each wrote a book about the most important things they want to relay about that person, do you think that all four would be the same and that there would be not inconsistencies? This applies to the Gospels also, the four evangelists are not trying to write a moment by moment biography like we do today. That type of history was unknown 2000 years ago. All four Gospels tell the truth about Jesus but from their different prospectives. They are evangelists, they are more concerned with telling the ‘Good News’ about Jesus Christ than writing a chronological history of his life.

That’s a great perspective. People seem to always pick the Church apart and scrutinize every single detail and writing. Not taking into account the facts and history behind the writings. God bless
