So it was formed on freedom of conscience? People always speak about how freedom of conscience is mentioned in one of the texts written by the founding fathers. Now, remeber that I am a non-american who hasn’t studied this subject.
 
The principles of the “enlightenment” era of philosophy were held true by most of the men who formed this nation. A sort of deism, they set out to create a secular state.

I would suggest reading The Federalist Papers and The US Constitution to get an idea of the thoughts of the founding fathers.
 
There are a lot of Catholics who attend Mass three times a year. Christmas, Ash Wednesday, and Easter.
