Hello!

I was planning to attend an EF Mass tomorrow (Sunday), which will not be celebrating the Ascension. However, I didn’t go to Mass on Ascension Thursday (I did go to a NO Mass last Thursday but the Ascension was not celebrated). Is it OK for me to go to the EF tomorrow, even though I didn’t celebrate the Ascension on Thursday?

If the OF Mass on Thursday was not the Ascension, that means that Mass and its obligation was transferred in the new calendar to Sunday in your ecclesiastical province.

So by assisting Sunday, you will meet your obligation. I see how this could cause apprehension; you feel as if you missed fulfilling your duty, because you will have missed the Ascension Mass entirely. Canon law imposes no sanction however for not hearing the propers of a particular Mass; it is your assisting on Sunday that counts, as far as I can tell.

The way some read the 1962 rubrics, the EF Ascension Mass (but not Office) could be celebrated on Sunday as an “external solemnity” for the benefit of people who could not assist on Thursday. There seems to be some uncertainty: see here and WDTPRS.

I think you are saying that the obligation goes with the territory, not the form of the mass you usually attend. That sounds right to me.
