Hi, I was asked to be a sponser recently for an enquirer that is ready to continue his journey. So I am wondering if some of the people here that have been sponsers can help me withy some of the things a sponser should do? Like exchange phone numbers, email addresses etc? Other things. Like should we be meeting outside of the regular classes? I need yo knopw zas m uch as I can . I truly want to be a good person for this person and help all I can to help him on his journey. I came into tyhe church 5 byrs ago and had an older guy for a sponser and he didn 't do much than go to the meetings. I had no way to contact hime other than seeing him at the meetings. One thing he did do was to go with me to meet the Bishop and etc. Just will appreciate any help that you can give me.
Thanks

Both his phone number and email will be very helpful to form a line of communication with him.

I sit near the person I sponsor during our classes.

Some people’s lives are so busy with children, RCIA meetings, work etc that it leaves little time for get togethers but it’s a good idea to meet for coffee or ice cream, etc when it works out with both your schedules.

Taking them out for a cup of coffee, going to Mass with them…

In our Confirmation program (8th grade students) we give the candidates discussion starters to go over with their sponsor.

Thanks to those that have answered so far. I appreciate any and all the help that you can give me.

The job of the sponsor is to encourage the catechumen/candidate in their journey and to help integrate them into parish life.

How this will happen in real life will obviously depend on the individuals. Taking them out to coffee or whatever on occasion is a nice gesture and would give you time to get to know them a bit more outside of the more formal class environment. It might also be nice to to invite them along to any special parish activity or ministry that you are involved in. Or help them meet the right person for whatever ministry that might be interested in getting involved in.
