Aspergillum pen

I collect fountain pens…so I attribute my knowledge of the apsergillum pen put out by the Parker Pen Company in the 1950s and 60s to that.

In those days, the Parker Pen Company (and several others) produced a pen-sized aspergillum. It had a fountain pen filling mechanism and a holy water sprinkler where the nib would have been. It was marketed at priests so they could have holy water with them all the time.

I’ll try to put up pictures in a few minutes.

I’d like to buy something like this for our priest as it is his first anniversary of his assignment to our parish.

Anyone knows where something like this? (I wonder if there are any fountain pen collectors here.)

I know for a fact that they appear from time to time on Ebay and I have bid on a few but I never I win.

The aspergillum pens have been around for a long time. I know some priests who don’t like them, though. I would NOT get the priest one without checking with him first. Individual preferences and tastes vary greatly among priests. Unless you are a very close personal friend of some years who is intimately familiar with his tastes and preferences, I would let the priest choose what he would like before ordering it.

If I saw a priest pull that out and start to sprinkle the people, I’d probably duck and think that I was about to get inked! I collect fountain pens, and suspect that Parker hasn’t made that since the 60’s. I have a pen that is the same model on which that sprinkler was based, and beyond maybe one sprinkling at something like a wake, I don’t think the fluid capacity would go very far. The purpose-built pocket sprinklers from religious supply stores would be a lot more practical I think.

Briefly, Chi Rho are the first two letters of Christ name in Greek (Χριστος).
