after finding out that most of my third grade students do not have a children’s picture Bible, I have decided to send a letter home asking parents to add some Catholic books to their Christmas list.

Here’s my suggestions:

Catholic children’s picture Bible
Saint stories–I haven’t decided on a specific book yet

Angel in the Waters– I read this in class and the kids were enthralled.

My Path to Heaven

Princess and the Kiss for the girls

Squire and the Scroll for the boys

The Weight of the Mass

How about suggesting a subscription to Magnifikids?

Any other ideas?

Should I include a list of recommendations for the parents–or is that too condescending?

Is it better to just ask them to get picture Bibles and not suggest anything else, so they won’t feel overwhelmed? Am I over thinking this?

I’m adding the DVD’s from CCC of America to my list.

The Nicholas and Juan Diego ones are particularly fitting to the season. 🙂

This is a good idea. Don’t make the list too long though. Vision’s saints books are good, but probably too hard for a 3rd grader to read on their own. There is a series of much shorter Saint’s lives for kids, but the best is probably a collection with one page per Saint.

Do you have a local Catholic bookshop? If so, include the address. Also maybe a couple of good catalog websites.

Does you local library system carry any Catholic children’s books? Many will have Tomie Dapaola books since he’s an award-winning author. Check and see so you can also suggest that for parents who don’t choose to buy books for Christmas.

Great idea! In fact, the Tomie DePaola book section is very good at the library. It has quite a few Catholic biographies.

Thanks!
