Assurance of Salvation can't EVER be obtained in this life?

So this is a terrifying notion to me. As Catholics, as our Church teaches, we really CAN NOT know if we are ever assured heaven in this life? I picked this up on this site as I was reading a forum in which a commentary on 1 John 4:18 said that even in this life, the saints will still have fear, not knowing if they are assured heaven. (paraphrased). Gosh. That is kind of dreadful.
