What exactly is the church policy on ecclesiastical asylum these days? There was a time when church was neutral ground but now fugitives are arrested during mass, so what exactly is the doctrine on it anymore? Is ecclesiastical asylum given to vagabonds? runaways?

The Vatican State in Rome is the only location for The Church that carries an identity as a separate country and therefore, has the protection from unauthorized search and seizure. Each physical church is not an Embassy, which is thus recognized as being a small part of the Nation that is represented by an Embassy. Instead, it is simply a church which is afforded the sanctity and protection of the authorities and of the laws and of the State/Country within which the church is located. And unfortunately, many authorities are no longer respectful of the sanctity of the church, and thus will demonstrate their power over the church by violating the sacrament of the Mass.

There is no doctrine of asylum. Any asylum granted would ever only be at the concession of the state, not the Church.

Asylum for vagabonds and runaways is a different matter, and it is up to the individual parish what kind of social services it will offer.

What about the “sanctuary” claimed in The Hunchback of Notre Dame. Was that historically correct?

Well thats actually what Im referring to, in the olden days of yore, people could fin shelter and respite wether travelers, runaways or criminals in a monastary or church can they still do that? Are preists obligated to help?

Mexico, a couple drug lords have been caught by storming into mass and arresting them.
