After confessing ones sins is there a certain line one must say or is a simply “These are all my sins (one can think of)”? Thanks and God bless.

There’s nothing you really HAVE to say… What you said was just fine.

When I was little we were taught to say, “I am sorry for these sins and all the sins of my past life, especially for xxxxx.” where xxxxx was whatever sin we thought was the worst or the hardest to keep from repeating.

It was a useful phrase to remember in case we got nervous and couldn’t think of what else to say. You will probably find that having some kind of memorized phrase to say at the end will help you for the same reason. (And being nervous is pretty normal, even if it’s not the first time.)

What I was taught to say after listing my sins was ‘for these and all my sins, I am truly sorry’. Lets the priest know you’ve come to the end of the list, kinda sorta catches sins you may have forgotten, and is a further affirmation of your penitence.

I always say (after my list of sins), “These are the sins on my conscience, for these and all of my other sins which I do not remember, I am truly sorry and I ask God’s pardon.”

Yeah, I’m pretty much a “stick to the script” kinda guy. I say it the same way every time. Maybe it’s just too wordy…

:amen:

" … for these, and for all of my offenses as they stand in the eyes of God, I ask for penance and absolution … "

for these and for all the sins of my past life I am truly sorry. You just want to wrap it up so the priest knows you are done, and that covers everything you have forgotten.

After one of my confessions that was particularly difficult for me, the Priest said “How many more people are out there in line?” For some reason I chuckle whenever I remember that. Jesus must have had such a sublime sense of humor.

I had similar today actually, not that the priest asked me but I was one of the last in line and it was getting close to the end of the scheduled time for Confessions. I definitely got the feeling that he was moving me along at a mighty brisk pace 🙂

Sir Knight…What a beautiful way to phrase it! I loved it! It shows
true repentance and humility.

I travel to go to confession to our old assistant priest. The church I go to is the cathedral and it only has the option of the old confessional . On Thursday I went and at the end, after I had recieved absolution I just blurted out “this is soo good”. I could hear the smile on fathers face as he said God bless!!

We are so lucky to belong to Christ’s Church and to have access to this wonderful sacrament!

I sometimes go to confession at our cathedral and it also is only equiped with the old confessional. I once went there, the green light was on. I went inside and confessed all of my sins and it was followed by silence. I wasn’t sure what to do next. I waited about a minute and then I heard some noise. I said “Father?” and he replied, “You may begin.”

Apparently he stepped out and there was nobody there when I made my confession and the noise I heard was him coming back.

I love the one where the priest was missing too!!!:yup:

I’m sure you got extra brownie points for having to replay your confession for him! :rotfl: But wasn’t there enough light that you could see that there was or wasn’t someone behind the screen/grille?

Every time I’ve been to confession the priest says a very short prayer to start with, or at least something along the lines of ‘Hello my child - may God help you to make a good confession’. So we know he’s there and is ready to hear the confession, otherwise you never know whether he might be doing something else while he’s waiting and not be ready!
