Atheist definition of "murder"?

What exactly is it? From arguments I’ve seen advanced it seems to be something decided by the laws of the State, I guess killing your next door neighbor because he’s gay isn’t “murder” if you live in a country run by thugs like in Iran. Or if you speak out opposing the repressive government in a communist dictatorship and they arrest you and summarily execute you that isn’t “murder” because it’s not a breach of the laws of that dictatorship. Am I missing something here?

Nope, you’re dead on. The history of atheistic regimes is exactly that. In practice every time an atheist government gets in power it kills massive numbers of people. Not because they don’t think its wrong, but because people are less important than achieving other goals. After all, they are not beings created by G-d, valuable for that reason alone, instead their value is in direct relation to the benefit they provide society.

In their minds, if there is no G-d then morals are nothing but peoples opinions. Which is right…if there is no G-d.

Personally, I agree with them morals are relative. I just think they are relative to G-d. What He says is Good is Good, what he says is bad is bad. Pretty simple.

According to this atheist definition of “murder” we’ve seen discussed, the totalitarian regime in George Orwell’s 1984 wouldn’t be considered as having actually committed any “murders” of it’s citizens, since the State itself defines what is and isn’t “murder”. What a depressing yet overly simplistic world view, no wonder they look at the Catholic definition of murder with contempt.

I don’t know what an ‘atheist definition’ of murder would be, but my definition of murder would be the same as the Catholic definition of murder: unlawful killing.
