NEW YORK — A British philosophy professor who has been a leading champion of atheism (search) for more than a half-century has changed his mind. He now believes in God — more or less — based on scientific evidence, and says so on a video released Thursday.

At age 81, after decades of insisting belief is a mistake, Antony Flew (search) has concluded that some sort of intelligence or first cause must have created the universe. A super-intelligence is the only good explanation for the origin of life and the complexity of nature, Flew said in a telephone interview from England.

It’s more logical to believe that God became man than to believe that the universe made itself.

I used to be an atheist, but common sense overcame me.

Mortimer Adler, the most influential philosopher of the 20th century and co-author of the Great Books program, became a Catholic in December, 1999, at the age of 97. Let’s pray that Professor Flew will follow.

The fact the man is now 81 leads me to beleive he reread Pascha’s wager. Bet on Christ my friend.

It is great that he has seen the light…to a certain extent. He believes in a God similar to that of Thomas Jefferson: distant, unconnected. Let’s hope he sees the full light found here in The Church.

He expressed surprise over the confusion some people have spread and asserted that his position about the belief in god remains unchanged and is the same as it was expressed in his famous speech “Theology and Falsification”. “I find no new reason to change my views”, Professor Flew said.
