Hello All-

A good friend of mine from high school is getting married next summer, and I’m wondering if I should go. We both attended the same Catholic high school but we were out of touch until last year. I learned that she had converted to “bible Christianity,” but I don’t know many of the particulars of her conversion. She was raised and confirmed Catholic, and I’m worried that by going I will either be a) advocating her leaving the fullness of the faith or, b) advocating a marriage which would possibly be considered invalid (un-sacramental, at least) by the Church. She has mentioned to me that her granparents (who are Catholic also) are quite upset that her wedding will be Christian, and they may not go as a result.

I’ve searched the EWTN forums and found many similar questions, but the answers all seem to vary. I’ve seen the experts say that it’s not ok to attend, and also that, when done strictly out of charity, it would be alright.

I’m quite confused on what to do here. I love my friend and am happy for her and her fiance, but I am also deeply saddened that she has left the Church. Any information or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

first of all any marriage between two baptized people, Catholic or Protestant, is valid. I would go out of charity, and pray for her and her husband. She’s more likely to return to Catholicism if she sees her Catholic friends as loving instead of shunning her.

heck, maybe you could get her “Rome Sweet Home” or some other such book for a wedding gift 🙂
