Blessings, all! I have been inviting my neighbor’s son, a man in his twenties, to Mass, and he has been attending with me roughly every-other Sunday. He has been blind since he was a baby, and I would like to give him further help.

Recently, while walking back home, he asked me “what is going on when the bells ring?” I realized that, having the ability only to hear and not to see the Mass leaves him at a great disadvantage. So, I had him over for dinner and played for him a talk from Fr. John Riccardo on the importance of the Mass for us Catholics, to cover the meanings or the “why’s” of what is happening. However, this still seems inadequate because even if he can understand the meanings of what is going on, he cannot see what it is that is actually going on.

I do not have the luxury of giving him a descriptive “play-by-play” during the Mass itself, and even if I could, I am not sure I would do an adequate job that is descriptive enough for someone who has been blind his entire life. My question is, is anyone aware of an audio presentation online that I may play for him that describes for a blind person every thing that a person with sight sees during the Mass? I will invite him over for dinner, and it would be great if he could get a mental image of what happens so that he then can associate the meanings to the actions.

Many thanks! His name is Trevor, so please pray for him and that the Holy Spirit use me in the fullest way possible to lead Trevor into a rich Christian Catholic life in Christ.

Wow. I am humbled when I read the wonderful things that people are doing. Many blessings to you and to Trevor!!

Saying a prayer for you both. Have you talked to your priest to see what the diocese has to offer?

I don’t know if this is a silly suggestion or not, but my first thought is that if he cannot see the mass, he can understand what is going on by using his other senses. So…

If I were in your situation, I’d ask my priest/deacon if he would give your neighbor a tactile tour of the parish and during that time allow him to touch a chalice, unconsecrated host, etc. that way, when you explain what is happening, he has a reference point.

Praying for Trevor (lovely name btw) and you. And let him know that St. Simeon was.blind too and he recognised Christ when Virgin Mary presented Him at the Temple. And people who could see Him in the bright light did not recognize Who they met. So maybe your friend coparticipates in the liturgy in a different way, not impaired at all.
