Author of Hebrews

I was reading Rob Bell’s book Love Wins and he mentioned something about “the woman who wrote the book of Hebrews.” SO that got me thinking…

Does anyone have any scholarly sources or bits of wisdom that would give a more definitive answer or at least more than just guesses?

Don’t know of too many scholars who have a lot of info…but some think it may have been Pricilla who wrote it.

It’s anonymous so it’s all conjecture.

The style of Hebrews is definitely not that of Paul, but the doctrine is definitely Paulinian. Catholic authors think that St.Paul inspired or directed the project but that the actual writing was done by someone else. Who it might be is both speculative and futile. Apollo is a name often mentionned.

Ancient tradition, among many saints, I find to be more reliable than the subjective academic scholar who usually has an agenda. Tradition says Paul originally wrote it in Aramaic, but it was then translated into Greek by Clement or Luke. But it is debatable, since great saints have differed.

Alan C Mitchell, the author of the Sacra Pagina commentary on the Epistle to the Hebrews believes that the evidence favors non-Pauline authorship. He does not think that Priscilla wrote it either. He claims that most modern scholars now agree that it is non-Pauline.

It is an interesting question, but the arguments for or against any specific author are highly complex.

Personally, I believe that Apollos could have been the author but after having looked into what the scholars themselves argue, the conclusion I draw is that it is too complex of a subject for me to reasonably tackle given my understanding of history, Greek, etc.
