I love Chesterton and Lewis works. I was wondering if there were some other good authors out there who have the intelligence and wit of Chesterton or the wisdom of Lewis. Looking for good reads from intellectuals

Thanks!

For some reason I always get the two mixed up! And I started out as an English major! 😊

THE SCREWTAPE LETTERS
MERE CHRISTIANITY
SURPRISED BY JOY
THE WEIGHT OF GLORY
REFLECTIONS ON THE PSALMS

If you are interested in other writers in their group of friends, there is Tolkien of course, Charles Williams, George MacDonald, and Dorothy Sayers.

Have you read Madeleine L’Engle - her best know book is Wrinkle in Time, but she has many non-fiction books on Christian faith. Or Kathleen Norris. I’ll keep thinking.

I have no idea if you would like her, but I LOVE Anne Lamott. She is an A number one read for those of us on the more progressive side of Christianity. Just trying to balance it all out.

Merton. Seven storey mountain.

Fulton Sheen. Chesterton wrote the forward for his first book.

Merton. Seven storey mountain.
Yes! AND all the following ones too. He wrote close to 70 books as I recall. I especially like Seeds of Contemplation, Ascent to Truth, and Contemplative Prayer.

Thomas Keating: INTIMACY WITH GOD

For those with an advanced spiritual life:

St. Francis de Sales: TREATISE ON THE LOVE OF GOD (one of my favorites)

If I want to be intelectually challenged, I will pick up something by Ravi Zacharias.
If I want to be inspired to be more Holy Spirit driven, it would be John Bevere.

Non-fiction: Caryll Houselander, Blessed John Henry Newman (I especially recommend “The Rule of our Warfare”)
Fiction: Michael D. O’Brien

I second John Henry Newman (there is a Newman Reader online) and Sheen.

Also recommend Gerald O’Collins and Raymond Brown. And Benedict XVI and St. JP II.

I STRONGLY recommend Father Malachi Martin’s “Hostage to the devil.” Its about the reality of demonic possession and exorcism. A very scary and interesting book. Couldn’t put it down.

Anything by Os Guinness, a perceptive sociologist and cultural commentator. His “Gravedigger File” is the collective counterpart of “Screwtape” on individuals.
